Financing a Vehicle Wheelchair Lift
Most major car manufacturers offer reimbursement programs that can help you cover the cost of purchasing and installing a vehicle lift when you buy one of their cars, trucks, or SUVs.
Ford Motor Company Mobility Motoring Program
The Mobility Motoring Program from Ford offers reimbursement of up to $1,000 for the purchase and installation of wheelchair lifts on any new Ford or Lincoln model vehicle. To qualify for this program, the wheelchair lift must be installed by a Ford Authorized Qualified Vehicle Modifier (QVM). Once you submit an invoice verifying the cost of your lift, you will receive a reimbursement check within two to four weeks. Your local Ford dealer will help you find a QVM and file your claim correctly.
GM Mobility Reimbursement Program
General Motors offers a similar reimbursement program. You may be eligible for a maximum of $1,000 cash back for the cost of installing a vehicle lift when you purchase a new Chevrolet, Buick, or GMC vehicle that is OnStar equipped. Certain vehicles do not qualify and your reimbursement application must be signed by a GM representative, so call or visit your local dealer for more information and assistance.
Toyota Mobility Assistance Program
When you purchase or lease a new Toyota, you can apply to their Mobility Assistance Program, which will pay you for up to $1,000 of the cost of your vehicle lift. To qualify, you must install your lift within 12 months of the purchase of your vehicle and submit your reimbursement application within 90 days of the installation of your lift.
- Other car manufacturers such as Subaru, Honda, Hyundai, Chrysler and Kia offer comparable reimbursement programs on new models.
Other Resources
In addition to car manufacturer programs, there are other resources available to help you finance the cost of your vehicle wheelchair lift.
The Veteran's Administration can help US veterans pay for their vehicle wheelchair lifts. Call 1-877-222-VETS to find out if you qualify.
Your local Area Agency on Aging may use funds from the Older Americans Act Title III to help local seniors install vehicle wheelchair lifts. Find your local Area Agency on Aging by calling (800) 677-1116.
Banks
Many banks and lending agencies offer loans for people who want to install a vehicle wheelchair lift. They also offer reverse mortgages that allow homeowners to turn the value of their home into cash. A HUD-approved housing counseling agency can help you decide if a reverse mortgage is right for you. Call your bank to find out if they offer a low-interest loan you can use to help pay for your vehicle wheelchair lift.
Health Insurance?
Many people don’t know that some private health insurance or long term care insurance plans help pay for vehicle wheelchair lifts. Call your health insurance provider to find out if you qualify for financial aid before you purchase your vehicle wheelchair lift.
Internal Revenue Service
Your vehicle wheelchair lift may actually qualify for tax deductions. Read IRS Publication 502 or call the IRS at (800) 829-3676 to find out if you qualify for such a tax deduction.
